Mental For Lentils

Lentil Soup is a favourite of mine, the aromatic spices fragrant the whole house when I cook this soup not to forget the pungent flavours of cumin, sweet paprika, coriander and cinnamon take me to another place, perhaps to the distinctly colourful stalls at the spice markets in the back streets of Dubai where the strong aromas hit you as soon as you step out of taxi…sorry enough daydreaming, it  is such a satisfying soup that is truly simple to make and delicious to eat what could be better than that? Well being in Dubai but we can settle for Lentils for today.

Spiced Lentil Soup

  • Servings: 6

A satisfying soup with mild aromatic spices


2 tsp olive oil

1 onions sliced

2 cloves garlic chopped

1 celery stalk

2 tsp cumin

2 tsp ground coriander

2 tsp sweet paprika

1/2 tsp cinnamon

Dried or fresh chopped chilli (optional)

Tin diced tomatoes

1.5L vegetable stock

300g tin brown lentils

juice of a lemon

natural yoghurt to serve


  1. Heat oil in a large pot over med- high heat and saute onions, garlic and celery for 4-5 mins
  2. Stir in spices for 30 secs until fragrant
  3. Add tomatoes simmer for 1-2 mins
  4. Add vegetable stock and lentils, reduce heat to low and simmer half covered with a lid for 20-25mins
  5. Once cooked using a stick blender pulse only half blending
  6. Stir through lemon juice
  7. Serve with a spoon of yoghurt
